We can go the direct route or we can go the long route ...
Today we only have to go 250km to Ludlow but will end up going 250 MILES !
I think we chose Ludlow because there are some really interesting drives through the Green Mountain and White Mountain parks. There better be something because we are staying here three days.
We decide today to explore some of the back roads (sound familiar ??) on the way.
Despite the fact that the leaf colour is now well past it’s prime and hasn’t been helped by sub-zero temperatures this morning, there was ice 10mm thick on the windscreen, there is sufficient evidence to ascertain that the views we pass would have been fantastic in full colour. There is kilometre after kilometre of avenues of trees and views across hills which would persuade me to come back to this part of New England at the correct time of year in the future.
There is no wind this morning and as we twist and wind through the “back blocks” we are treated to spectacular reflections in the myriad of lakes we pass.

I have looked at this one, even magnified, and still find it hard to work out which way is up.

It is obvious from all the small holiday cottages which ring all the lakes on private roads that this is a money area.
This particular lake was very impressive.
We manage to get lost several times as what are on the map as public roads turn out to be blocked off and declared “private” in a number of locations.
Never the less we manage to find our way towards our final destination.
As we draw near we pass several covered bridges.

I have always had a soft spot for them after reading and seeing “Bridges of Madison County”. These are not in and are not as pretty as those in Madison County but we will probably go back tomorrow to see if we can find and photograph a few more.
