Today we start the journey back to the West Coast

alt

We are headed toward Niagara (Buffalo) where we pick up the train for a two day journey to Salt Lake City.  We have enough time to not follow the interstate highway but to take a more scenic route through the northern part of the state of Vermont and Into Upstate New York.  We have not booked any accommodation for the next couple of days and as long as we make the train connection in three days time we can organise as we go.
It’s very similar to what we have been experiencing for the last week but every now and then we see another interesting spot.
As we go towards the Great Lakes the climate is influenced to be slightly warmer and we find pockets where the fall colour is still if full glory.

There are no great vistas butalt

we can stop for half an hour and focus, pardon the pun, on some interesting details.

Further on down the track there is another wildlife centre where we are led to believe there are otter and mink frolicking around.
A pleasant hour is spent strolling the leafy glades but of course no otter or mink.alt

At one of the footbridges over which we pass there is quite a (small) cascade over some big rocks which creates some interesting patterns with which I can’t resist experimenting.
This is a normal fast shutter speed which “freezes” the motion of the wateralt

And this is the same flow with a slow shutter speed which allows the water to blur.alt

There are also some interesting other patterns which although photographed in full colour, because of the overcast light, have the appearance of a black and white image.

Eventually we have to press on to Rochester for our overnight stop before tomorrow’s trip to Chicago.  There is a hurricane bearing down on the coast and it is bringing some rain even as far in as we are so we can’t drive too far into the dark .
