Yet another “Transport Stage”

The only thing near Page that could have kept us around longer is the famous “Horseshoe Bend” in the Colorado River. Anybody who is anybody in photography has taken this photo but there is one little problem with it. It requires that you crawl out on the edge of a very high cliff and hang your camera out over the edge, preferably on a long stick, to get the full scene. As both Mark and I are not good with heights we decide to give this site a miss and head on out.
A quick trip past the what turns out to be a very ugly Glen Canyon Dam that creates Lake Powell and we are on our way.

There is very little of interest along the way until we come to the Little Grand Canyon on the Little Colorado River. This is a spectacular canyon all by itself but it is very deep and narrow and the rocks are a brown colour so photos just don’t seem to work.
Eventually we get to the beginning of the real Grand Canyon and the first lookout, the historical Watchtower. This is one of the few things that seem the same as in my 1989 visit.

The resort and lodge area is a complete rabbit warren but eventually we find our accommodation and get settled. There is just enough time to get to the nearest overlook for sunset and set up. In my case it’s well away from the edge but close enough to get some decent views. Again it’s a case of going right to the edge if you want great panoramas but I am going to settle for some detail shots. There isn’t a cloud in the sky and the 8inches of snow that was supposed to happen on the opposite rim just didn’t so the results are pretty ordinary.

Eventually about 20minutes after the sun has gone down there is a bit of diffusion and reflection in the light and I manage to capture a slightly more appealing view.

Tomorrow we are going to get up at 5am to be out here for the dawn but as the evening is a coolish 0deg C it is going to be a bit of an effort.
