Today is a local day ...
We have decided to stay two nights here as it is supposed to be one of the nicest regions.
Unfortunately, and I can hear it now ... "there he goes again", the weather has deteriorated.
We drive to the local beach just on the edge of town to look at the black sand and brave the elements. There is some momentary brightening of the sky so we make the most of it.

The headland here is over a kilometre away and is being covered in sea spray.

Strangely enough I find a little brown rock and we can't decide from where it can possibly have come.

By now the cameras are in danger becoming waterlogged so we decide to dry them out as we drive to the other side of the headland.

where the ocean is creating massive waves well out to sea.

They are breaking for over a kilometre and filling the air with spray and mist ... nothing seems in focus anymore

so I find a bit of shelter out of the wind in a crevasse of sand leading out to the sea. Even in the salty black volcanic sand something finds a place to grow.

While trying to create some slightly different viewpoints I notice that the sides of the chasm are dotted with small cairns of rock precariously balanced at odd points.

Unfortunately I did not notice the odd "king wave" and end up wading out of the ocean with boots full of sea water ...
By now we have had enough and decide to head back to the guest house for a change of clothes and will only venture out again tonight in search of food.
